What is Shilajit

Shilajit, also known as mineral pitch, is a sticky, black resin found mainly in the Himalayan mountains. It is composed of humic and fulvic acids derived from the decomposition of plant matter. Shilajit has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine to treat various health conditions.

Different Forms of Shilajit

Shilajit is available in powder, capsule, and resin forms. The powder form is the most common form of shilajit and is typically taken orally. Capsule form is also taken orally, but the capsules are designed to dissolve slowly, gradually releasing the active ingredients. Resin is the least common form of shilajit and is usually taken sublingually (under the tongue). Shilajit resin is the most potent form of shilajit.

What is Humic Acid

Humic acid is a type of organic matter that plays an important role in the ecosystem. It is found in soil and helps decompose plant and animal material. Humic acid is also present in our bodies and serves several essential functions. Humic acid is a powerful antioxidant that can help regulate metabolism, remove toxins and heavy metals from the body, boost immunity, and protect cells from damage. Humic acid also plays a role in the absorption of nutrients. Our body breaks down the nutrients into small molecules when we consume food. These molecules are then absorbed into the bloodstream through the walls of the intestine. However, some nutrients are not absorbed properly due to their size or charge. Humic acid helps usher these nutrients across the intestine so the body can utilize them. 

What is Fulvic Acid

Fulvic acid is a type of organic acid produced by decomposing plant matter. It is found in humic substances, which are black and dark brown particles often found in soils, sediments, and peat bogs. Fulvic acids are known to be strong electrolytes, which means they can easily dissociate into ions in water. This property makes fulvic acids ideal for use in the human body. Fulvic acids can help to improve nutrient absorption, support the immune system, and detoxify the body. Fulvic acids have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

A study in the National Library of Medicine research suggests that shilajit helps force the destruction and causes apoptosis of cancerous cells in the liver. 2

Shilajit for Diabetes

The main active ingredient in shilajit is fulvic acid, which has been shown to stimulate insulin release and improve glucose tolerance. It is thought to work by stimulating the pancreas to produce more insulin, increase glucose uptake by cells, and promote weight loss. In one study, rats with diabetes were treated with shilajit for eight weeks. 2 At the end of the treatment period, the rats had significantly lower blood sugar levels and improved insulin sensitivity. Moreover, their pancreas showed signs of increased activity. 3

These results suggest that shilajit may be an effective diabetes treatment. Further research is needed to confirm these findings in humans. However, if proven effective, shilajit could provide a natural and safe way to treat this chronic disease.

Shilajit for Heart Health

Research suggests that shilajit can improve heart health by reducing inflammation, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels. Shilajit may help to lower blood pressure and prevent blood clots.

Shilajit for Brain Health and Cognition

Shilajit in Ayurvedic medicine has been used to treat a variety of conditions, including brain health. Some people believe that shilajit can improve memory and cognitive function and protect the brain from age-related damage. There is some scientific evidence to support these claims. Studies have shown that shilajit can enhance memory and learning and protect the brain from oxidative stress. Additionally, shilajit has been shown to boost levels of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which is essential for cognitive function.

And this from the National Library of Medicine: “Shilajit is a potent and very safe dietary supplement, potentially able to prevent several diseases, but its main medical application now appears to come from its actions in benefit of cognition and potentially as a dietary supplement to prevent Alzheimer's disease. In essence, this is a nutraceutical product. Considering the expected impact of shilajit applications in the medical field, especially in neurological sciences, more investigations at the basic biological level are necessary, and certainly well-developed clinical trials, in order to understand how its active principles act at molecular and cellular levels.” 4

Shilajit also shows promise for Parkinson's disease because of its ability to increase dopamine levels in the brain. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that plays a vital role in movement, emotion, and cognition. Parkinson's disease is a neurological disorder that is characterized by dopamine deficiency. Preliminary research suggests that shilajit may help improve dopamine levels in people with Parkinson's disease. In one study, rats given shilajit showed an increase in dopamine levels by 40% and a decrease in Parkinson's symptoms.

Shilajit for Adrenal Fatigue

Because of its unique chemical composition, shilajit has various benefits for human health. One of these benefits is its ability to improve adrenal function. The adrenal glands are responsible for producing hormones that help the body respond to stress. However, they can become fatigued due to chronic stress, resulting in various symptoms such as fatigue, anxiety, and difficulty sleeping. Shilajit has been shown to help improve adrenal function by reducing the amount of cortisol (the stress hormone) in the body. As a result, it can help reduce stress levels and improve overall well-being.

Shilajit for Hormone Imbalances

Shilajit can be used for hormonal imbalances. Shilajit is a potent tonic for the endocrine system. Research shows that shilajit can help increase testosterone levels and progesterone levels while also reducing estrogen levels. This balance is essential for maintaining optimal hormone health. In addition, shilajit has been shown to improve thyroid function and reduce stress levels.

Hair Mask Recipe

To use shilajit for hair growth, make a mask of 2 eggs, 2 tbs of honey and 2 gms of shilajit, blending thoroughly until creamy. Brush onto hair and cover with a shower cap. After an hour, rinse off the mask with warm water. Then shampoo as usual.

Shilajit Coffee

Ingredients:

0.3 grams of shilajit

1 cup of coffee (if you want to avoid acidic coffee click here) I linked to my favorite but look around as there are many other flavorful coffees.

Instructions:

For the shilajit resin coffee, you will need to measure out 0.3 grams and dissolve in your coffee. The heat will not harm the benefits.

For shilajit powders you can just measure out 1/8 of a tsp. For capsules, you can break open the capsule and pour it in.

Shilajit Hot Chocolate

Ingredients:

2 cups of plant milk (I use homemade almond milk)

2 tbs of raw cacao powder

1/2 tsp - 1 tsp of mushroom powder (The best hands down! No mycelium) I like to get the Turkey Tail or the 5 Defenders for their cancer-fighting properties).

1-2 tbs of date syrup (whatever amount your preference)

1 tsp vanilla

0.3 gms of shilajit

Sprinkle of cinnamon if desired

Instructions:

Put all ingredients into a blender until smooth and all of the lumps are gone. Pour hot chocolate into a mug. Add a sprinkle of cinnamon.

Shilajit Soup

Ingredients:

2 cups vegetable broth

1 small knob of ginger (or use as much as you like)

3 cloves of garlic

1/4 cup chopped onion

.03 grams of shilajit resin or 1/8 tsp of powder

1/2 cup of carrots or other veggies

Instructions:

Saute’ the ginger, onion and garlic in a small amount of vegetable broth. Set aside. Boil the vegetable broth in a small saucepan. Add the shilajit to the broth and stir until melted in. Add your 1/2 cup of veggies, and the sauteed ingredients to the broth. Cook until the carrots or other veggies are soft.

Additionally, you can just drink the broth with shilajit. Maybe add some mushroom powder and spices too.

You can also add shilajit to teas, gravy, quinoa, etc. Please just add it to something! You will soon be reaping the benefits and feel absolutely fantastic!

Shilajit Side Effects

Shilajit is generally considered safe when taken by mouth or applied to the skin, but there have been some reports of side effects. These include stomach upset, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Some people have also reported skin rashes and itching after using shilajit. Overall, shilajit appears to be safe for most people. If shilajit is used correctly and taken at the correct dose, there have been no known reported side effects. Any side effects from shilajit may be due to low quality or a company claiming to be selling shilajit, but it isn't shilajit at all. Not all shilajit on the market is trustworthy. Some shilajit contain added ingredients such as fertilizer.

If you are on medication, it is best to talk to your healthcare provider no matter what supplements you choose to take. If you notice unusual symptoms such as an allergic reaction, nausea, vomiting, itchiness, dizziness, increased heart rate, etc., please stop taking shilajit and talk to your doctor. Keep in mind that I have taken shilajit and know of many people who have had no side effects while taking shilajit. I just don't want to suggest a supplement without ruling out this remote possibility.

The benefits of shilajit are extraordinary and far-reaching. Talk to your doctor to see if shilajit can be added to your regimen. 

Please make sure that any company you go through for your shilajit uses 3rd party testing, has product liability insurance to protect against any health injury that may arise, has a certificate of analysis, meets US standards, and has a USA state license to sell shilajit.
