CharlieMy first horse was named Charlie (Blue Daniel’s Charlie Brown), and he was a big, flashy black Missouri Fox Trotter. I got him as a 10-year-old from a guy up in Colorado who’d been using him for Endurance riding. I was 40 and thrilled beyond measure.

Charlie was smart and elegant. I felt like royalty on him. He moved like silk and was brave. He loved to go forever. If we were with others, he preferred to be roughly a quarter mile ahead of everybody else. This was occasionally problematic, but I didn’t care because mostly we went out by ourselves. He was the wind and the air. He was freedom.  He was my buddy.
